Fifties Fashion explained!

In the fifties good grooming and a tailored look were prized. Acting and looking "every inch the lady" was taught virtually from the cradle and wearing a dress was a given.

Ladies wore have heels and gloves. This was required to complete the look.

Daily attire included summery afternoon dresses with swing skirts. This very popular style had many forms, including the poodle skirt.

Another type of popular dress was the pencil style. The object here is to attain an hourglass, or figure eight, body shape. Many also had bolero sleeves, which were popular, as well as small jackets.

'Peter Pan' collars were very in vogue and were sported on most dresses through the period.

Key features of the decade:

• Pencil and full circle skirts
• Sack and sheath dresses
• Empire lines, especially empire line LBDs
• The American influence (wide belts, gloves and hats, nipped in waists)
